A First Time for Everything: Sailing Edition
On Tuesday, I went sailing for the first time ever. Kenji + his mom invited me to join them on their friend’s boat and we sailed a bit around the San Francisco bay, waiting until fireworks time.
I actually can’t swim. [Not for a lack of trying – my parents put me in swimming lessons early on but no matter what, it seemed that I failed to learn. I’m hoping to try again soon.] So, I was a bit nervous. Luckily, the extremely large, puffy life vest made me feel better.
After the initial am I going to sea sick ????? stage, I found myself enjoying the sea wind and San Francisco cityscape.
We also encountered one very cute sea lion and many flocks of pelicans.
Eventually, golden hour and blue hour passed, giving way to nightfall. Unfortunately, the characteristic San Francisco fog got in the way of the fireworks at Pier 39 (we could see only the bottom half of the large, spherical firework flowers) but I still had a lovely time! I even got to steer for a bit 🙂
Hopefully a swimming lesson (or two, or three) and more sailing are in my future.
